Scott Shelley has been involved in racing as a driver, mechanic, and race-driving instructor for more than 20 years. He began competing in motocross in his teens, but moved quickly to NASCAR stock car racing. He won rookie-of-the-year honors in his first season, and served as a crew chief and later a driver in West Coast short track races, where he was a consistent front runner. After an introduction to road racing in the early 1980s, Scott decided to leave oval racing to compete on road courses in England. There he drove production and formula cars for Jim Russell Racing. While in the UK, he also worked as a driving instructor at the Jim Russell Racing Drivers School, and as a demonstration driver and spokesperson for BMW, Saab, Vauxhall, Alfa Romeo, and Citroen. Beginning in 1992 he campaigned in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) events, driving a Formula Vee in Regional and National competition. In 1997 and 1998 he competed in American City Racing League events. Scott raced in his first SCCA event in a car owned by Colin Cross and the two have remained friends on and off the track.
